Configuring Starlink for a Hotel

๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘‰ About | Services | Charity

You can connect your Starlink internet to a Wi-Fi hotspot system that generates login tickets. This is useful if you want to start a business selling Wi-Fi access to people using daily, hourly, or weekly tickets.

For example, if you want to operate this business in Awka or another part of Nigeria, you can set up a system where customers connect to your Wi-Fi, enter a username and password from a ticket, and pay for access.

1. What you need

You will need the following equipment:

Equipment

Purpose

Starlink dish and router

Provides internet connectivity

MikroTik router

Controls customersรข€™ access and creates login accounts

Wi-Fi access points

Distribute Wi-Fi coverage to customers

Hotspot ticket system

Generates usernames and passwords for customers

Smartphone or laptop

Manages the system and creates tickets

My recommendation: Use a MikroTik router with its built-in Hotspot feature. You can create login tickets, limit internet speed, set access durations, and control how many devices can use each ticket.

2. How to connect Starlink to the ticket system

The connection will look like this:

Starlink Dish → Starlink Router → MikroTik Router → Wi-Fi Access Points → Customers’ Phones

You can also connect the MikroTik directly to Starlink using Ethernet, depending on your Starlink model.

Step 1: Connect Starlink to MikroTik

  1. Make sure your Starlink internet is working.
  2. Connect an Ethernet cable from Starlink to the MikroTik router’s WAN port.
  3. Configure the MikroTik WAN connection to obtain an IP address automatically using DHCP.
  4. Depending on your Starlink model, you may need an Ethernet adapter or to enable Bypass Mode in the Starlink app.

Step 2: Configure the hotspot

On the MikroTik router, configure the Hotspot service using RouterOS.

This allows you to:

  • Display a Wi-Fi login page.
  • Create usernames and passwords for customers.
  • Set time limits for each ticket.
  • Control customers’ internet speed.
  • Disconnect users when their access expires.

MikroTik’s official guide explains how to configure this system: MikroTik Hotspot Setup Guide

Step 3: Create Wi-Fi login tickets

For example, you could sell the following packages:

Package

Example price

1-hour access

รข‚¦100

3-hour access

รข‚¦200

24-hour access

รข‚¦500

7-day access

รข‚¦2,000

These are illustrative prices, not recommended market rates. You can choose your own prices.

You can generate tickets with unique usernames and passwords and print them for customers.

Step 4: Extend your Wi-Fi coverage

If you want customers to access your service across a street, compound, school, or business area, you may need outdoor access points. The number and type will depend on the coverage area and number of customers.

Since you have Starlink Gen 3 and want to provide paid Wi-Fi in a hotel for at least 50 people, I recommend a MikroTik hotspot system with login vouchers.

The system should allow hotel guests to connect to your Wi-Fi, enter a ticket username and password, and access the internet for a specified period.

Important: Supporting 50 users requires more than just a powerful router. You need to consider the number of people using the internet simultaneously, Wi-Fi coverage across the hotel, and the internet speed allocated to each guest.

4. Which MikroTik router should you buy?

I recommend these two options for your hotel.

Option 1: MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN — My first choice

Since you have Starlink Gen 3 and want to provide paid Wi-Fi in a hotel for at least 50 people, I recommend a MikroTik hotspot system with login vouchers.

The system should allow hotel guests to connect to your Wi-Fi, enter a ticket username and password, and access the internet for a specified period.

4. Which MikroTik router should you buy?

I recommend these two options for your hotel.

Option 1: MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN — My first choice

Official product page: MikroTik RB5009UPr+S+IN

This is another strong option. It has PoE output on its Ethernet ports, allowing it to power compatible access points and other network equipment.

Its main advantage is the ability to supply power to compatible devices over Ethernet, although you must check the power requirements of your access points.

My advice: If you want a powerful hotel hotspot, choose the RB5009UG+S+IN and add a suitable PoE switch for your access points. Consider the PoE version if its power features suit your installation.

5. Other equipment you will need

The MikroTik router alone will not provide reliable Wi-Fi coverage throughout a large hotel.

Here is an example of a suitable setup for 50 or more guests.

Equipment

Suggested quantity

Purpose

Starlink Gen 3

1

Internet connection

MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN

1

Hotspot management and login tickets

Ceiling-mounted Wi-Fi 6 access points

3รข€“5 initially

Provide Wi-Fi in guest rooms and common areas

PoE network switch

1

Connect and power compatible access points

Cat6 Ethernet cables

As required

Connect the network equipment

UPS backup

1 or more

Keep the network running during short power interruptions

The number of access points will depend on your hotel’s layout, number of floors, wall construction and room arrangement. Three to five is an initial planning estimate, not a guarantee of coverage.

6. How your hotel’s Wi-Fi ticket system will work

Your network can be configured as follows:

Starlink Gen 3 → MikroTik RB5009 → PoE switch → Wi-Fi access points → Hotel guests

When a guest connects to your Wi-Fi:

  1. The guest selects your hotel Wi-Fi network.
  2. A login page opens.
  3. The guest enters a ticket username and password.
  4. The MikroTik router verifies the ticket.
  5. The guest receives internet access according to the ticket’s limits.
  6. When the ticket expires, the guest’s access ends.

You can configure packages such as:

Ticket

Access duration

Example price

Short stay

2 hours

รข‚¦200

Daily

24 hours

รข‚¦500

Weekly

7 days

รข‚¦2,000

Monthly

30 days

รข‚¦5,000

These prices are examples only. You can set your own prices or provide complimentary internet access to hotel guests.

You can also configure speed limits for individual users to help prevent one guest from consuming too much bandwidth.

For Starlink Gen 3, you can connect a third-party router through Ethernet. Starlink documents the relevant connection method and router settings in its official third party guidance.

you need a hotel-wide Wi-Fi hotspot system covering more than 40 rooms across two buildings, with two floors in each building, and printed login tickets for guests.

I recommend a central MikroTik router with a dedicated hotspot ticket system, several Wi-Fi access points, and Ethernet connections between the buildings.

The most important point is that you do not need a separate MikroTik router for every floor or building. One suitably configured central router can manage the entire network, provided the network equipment and cabling are designed correctly.

1. Recommended network design

Your hotel has two buildings, each with two floors. I would plan the network like this:

             STARLINK GEN 3

                   |

                   |

            MIKROTIK ROUTER

             RB5009 SERIES

                   |

             POE NETWORK SWITCH

                   |

          MAIN HOTEL BUILDING

           |               |

       Ground floor     First floor

       Wi-Fi APs         Wi-Fi APs

                   |

          BUILDING-TO-BUILDING

             NETWORK LINK

                   |

             SECOND BUILDING

             |             |

         Ground floor   First floor

         Wi-Fi APs      Wi-Fi APs

Important: If the buildings are separated by a significant distance, a fibre-optic link or a suitable wireless bridge may be preferable to running ordinary Ethernet between them. The best choice depends on the distance and whether there is a clear line of sight.

2. Equipment I recommend for your hotel

For a hotel with more than 40 rooms across four floors, I would plan for the following equipment.

Equipment

Recommended quantity

Purpose

MikroTik RB5009UG+S+INรข

1

Manages internet access, tickets and speed limits

Gigabit PoE+ network switch, preferably 24-port

1

Connects and powers compatible access points

Wi-Fi 6 ceiling access points

Start with 6รข€“8

Provides Wi-Fi across guest rooms and corridors

Fibre-optic cable or wireless bridge

1 link

Connects the two buildings

Network rack and patch panel

1 set

Keeps equipment organised

UPS

1 or more

Provides backup power

Cat6 Ethernet cable

As required

Connects the access points

Important: Six to eight access points is an initial estimate. A site survey should determine the final number and placement. If the hotel has thick concrete walls or many rooms, you may need more.

For the equipment, see the official MikroTik RB5009 specifications.

3. How to generate and print your Wi-Fi tickets

You have two main options.

Option A: MikroTik Hotspot with voucher management

The MikroTik router can run the Hotspot service, while a voucher-management system helps you create and print tickets in batches.

One option to investigate is Hotspots.ng, which advertises voucher generation and management for MikroTik networks. Check its current pricing and compatibility with your chosen router before purchasing.

Option B: A dedicated hotel Wi-Fi billing system

A dedicated platform such as iberry WiFi advertises printed vouchers, time and speed limits, and central management for hotel and guest Wi-Fi networks in Africa. Ask the provider for a quotation for your hotel in Nigeria.

For your requirements, I would choose a solution that lets reception staff generate tickets without needing to configure the MikroTik router manually each time.

Example of a printed ticket

Your hotel could print a card like this:

HOTEL GUEST WI-FI

Item

Example

Wi-Fi network

HOTEL GUESTS

Username

HTL260001

Password

583921

Validity

24 hours

Speed limit

5 Mbps

Devices allowed

1

These are sample credentials, not working login details.

The receptionist can give a ticket to each guest at check-in. You can also create different packages for different room categories.

4. How much should you budget?

Your total cost will depend on the access points, cable lengths, building-to-building connection, installation and voucher software.

For an accurate estimate, I recommend getting a quotation that separates:

  • MikroTik router.
  • PoE switch.
  • Wi-Fi access points.
  • Cabling and building-to-building link.
  • Installation and configuration.
  • Voucher software and any recurring subscription.
