Nigeria Air Force Neutralises Fleeing Insurgents In Borno With Powerful Air Strikes

May 17, 2018 /

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said it has neutralised many fleeing insurgents in its ongoing “Operation Thunder Strike’’ against the Boko Haram terrorists in the North East. The NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, AVM, Vanguard reports.
Olatokunbo Adesanya, who confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, said the air interdiction commenced on Monday.
“On the first day of the operation, air strikes from NAF aircraft resulted in the destruction of terrorists’ structures and the death of all the insurgents at a settlement in Gargash and at another one, East of Gargash, both in Borno.
“Earlier, a NAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft had observed Boko Haram terrorists presence over a settlement in Gargash, following which the Air Task Force deployed NAF fighter aircraft to attack the location.
“After the successful attacks, some of the fighter platforms proceeded to an adjoining target, East of Gargash, where terrorists’ activities were also observed.
“As a result of the attacks, the Boko Haram terrorists’ structures within the settlements were destroyed and set on fire, killing some insurgents, while some fled to hide under trees at a nearby bush.
“Consequently, another wave of air strikes was launched to strafe the hideouts, killing many of the fleeing insurgents,’’ he said.
Adesanya said that the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Abubakar had been in Maiduguri. He said that Abubakar had gone there to motivate the frontline personnel and also obtain firsthand information on the progress of the operation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NAF commenced the operation on Monday in the North East.
It is an air interdiction aimed at attacking selected Boko Haram terrorists’ locations that were inaccessible on account of the onset of the rainy season.

Drug Abuse: Aisha Buhari Speaks On Codeine, Others

Speaking while receiving members of Association of Lady Pharmacists (ALP) on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, urged pharmacists to play their part in controlling the spread of drug abuse in the country.
According to a statement by her media aide, Suleiman Haruna, Mrs. Buhari deplored the frequent abuse of some prescription drugs especially by women and youths, which has led to the destruction of the lives of millions of victims and called on the members of this association to play their part in the ongoing effort to protect women and youths from drug abuse.
“Government has done well by banning importation of codeine for the preparation of cough syrups as well as retailing of codeine containing cough syrups without prescription.
"There is the need for pharmacists to comply with the enforcement directive. Lady Pharmacists as mothers, have a special role in protecting women and youths against drug abuse,” she said.
Mrs. Buhari extolled members of the pharmaceutical profession for their role in research, production and dispensing of medicines that cure diseases and save lives.

Chelsea Hit With FA Fine After Huddersfield Fracas

Chelsea have been fined £20,000 by the Football Association (FA) for failing to control their players during a 1-1 Premier League draw with Huddersfield Town this month.
Antonio Rudiger was among a group of players who vented their frustration at referee Lee Mason and his assistants when the whistle was blown for half-time before Chelsea could take a corner kick.
Marcos Alonso netted an equaliser for Chelsea after Laurent Depoitre had put Huddersfield in front - a result that preserved the Terriers' top-flight status and severely dented Chelsea's top-four aspirations.
An FA statement read: "Chelsea have been fined £20,000 after accepting a charge for failing to ensure their players and/or officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.

"The incident occurred at half-time during the game against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday 9 May."
Chelsea ended the season in fifth, behind Liverpool, after losing 3-0 at Newcastle United on the final day.

Arsene Wenger Speaks On Joining PSG

Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has denied any contact with Paris Saint-Germain, over taking a role with the Ligue 1 club.
Wenger however admits he has always been close with PSG owners.
There are speculations that the French club would be interested in having Wenger in a general director role, having appointed Thomas Tuchel as their new manager.
“I have only just finished, so I have not taken a decision.

“There has been no contact [with PSG], so, for the moment, I am really staring at a blank page.
“We have always been close, and I even encouraged [ownership] to buy PSG at the time. I thought that with their means, there was something to be created, to do, in a city that loves football. You have that in every country – you cannot have a small team in a capital city.

“They have done well there, they have started the job and I think that we are a little demanding of PSG today,”Wenger told beIN SPORTS when asked about his future.

NYSC Members To Get Health Insurance - Official Reveals

Speaking while contributing to a motion sponsored by Andrew Uchendu (APC, Rivers), the chairman of Senate Committee on Health, Lanre Tejuoso (APC, Ogun Central), disclosed at plenary on Wednesday that the 2018 budget has provided for corps members to be covered by health insurance.
According to PREMIUM Times, this will be implemented from the one percent of consolidated revenue fund to be dedicated to health, as stipulated by the National Health Act.
Uchendu had lamented the insensitivity of officials of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) towards corps members who fall sick during the three weeks orientation.
He made reference to Hilda Amadi who died last month at the NYSC camp in Yipkata, Kwara State.
Miss Amadi, who was a graduate of Oil and Gas Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State where she hailed from, was said to have slumped and died on April 26.
Her death came days after she suffered a bone fracture during a morning drill on April 23.
Uchendu expressed disappointment at the fact that no attention was paid to her by the NYSC officials.

“They refused to let her friend, Jennifer Dike, take her home as they insisted that her parents must come from Port Harcourt to pick her up. Even when the doctors resolved to take her to Illorin for serious attention, that decision was not implemented,” he said.
He said her friend, Jennifer, saw an ambulance speeding out of the camp and was surprised that when she got back to the camp clinic to see another patient was on the bed.

“On the same day, corps members were assembled and informed of the death of Hilda. Neither the camp commandant nor the Kwara State NYSC coordinator deemed it necessary to visit late Hilda at the camp clinic.

“The corpse was taken home to Port Harcourt after four days by a Mr Morris, the ambulance driver alone without any official from the camp accompanying him. That is not the way to treat someone who was on National service,”he said.
In his remark, Tejuoso stated that the one per cent of the Consolidate Revenue Fund (CRF) will ensure that youth corpers are covered by health insurance.

“I want to refer to the budget that we are passing today; that the issue of youth corpers in Nigeria is well highlighted.

“The introduction of the one per cent of the consolidated revenue fund that is going to be introduced in this new budget will ensure that all the youth corpers are covered by the health insurance.

“At events like this, you don’t need to rely on the doctors in camp. Any youth corper will be entitled to go to any hospital in the location in the local government that is covered by health insurance.

“So this kind of incident won’t repeat itself. The solution is included in this new budget that all the 300,000 youth corpers, every year, will be covered by the health insurance,” he said.
The Senate, thereafter, observed a minute silence for Ms Amadi and commended her friend, Jennifer Dike, for being there for her till her death.

School Principal Tie Students To Crosses As Punishment For Lateness - Photos

According to a report by Punch Metro, the Ogun State Police Command on Wednesday arrested the proprietor and principal of Metorite Standard School, Ayetoro, for allegedly tying up two pupils of the school to  ‘crosses’ and flogging them with a horsewhip.
The proprietor, Afolayan Joseph, and the yet-to-be-identified principal were said to have tied the pupils for allegedly coming late to school.
Punch Metro reports that a policeman, identified only as Livinus, who witnessed the incident and cautioned the men, was beaten up.
Joined by other residents, the policeman was said to have succeeded in getting the suspects arrested.
It was learnt that the suspects were taken to the Itele Police Station.
The policeman, who is attached to the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit, told Punch Metro that the pupils were tied to the wooden crosses in the open.
Another student
He said, “I was going to work this morning (Wednesday) when I saw some cars parked by the roadside. I discovered that it was because of some pupils that were tied to crosses. When I saw it, I parked and went to meet the proprietor of the school. I introduced myself as a policeman and told him to untie the pupils. He refused, saying there was nothing anybody could tell him that would make him to release them.
“When I tried to untie the pupils, the proprietor and his teachers beat me up. Before I returned from picking handcuffs from my car, they had grabbed a friend who was with me,  Omaje iremi, and beaten him up with a horsewhip.

“I entered the school – with the help of some neighbours who gathered around – to arrest him, but he refused to follow me. I then called the Divisional Police Officer of the Itele Police Station and he sent some policemen to the school, who took everybody to the station.”
The DPO of Itele Police Station, who declined to give his name, said the proprietor did not like the policeman’s attempt to correct him.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the arrests of the two men, as well as a teacher in the school.
He said, “It is a barbaric incident because I don’t see any offence that a secondary school pupil will commit that will make someone to tie him or her and be flogging them in public.

“They have been arrested and will be taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

“The act is no longer a corrective measure; it is a barbaric act and it will not be allowed in this 21st century.”

I Didn't Beg To Be VP, I Can Leave At Short Notice - Osinbajo Reacts To Incessant Killings

Speaking while responding to questions raised by some Christian leaders at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the new Banquet Hall of the Benue State Government House Makurdi, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday night, said he would rather vacate his office as the nation’s Number Two man than compromise his Christian faith.
According to PUNCH Newspaper, the VP said under no circumstances would he give up his faith but would rather vacate his position as the nation’s Vice-President at the slightest attempt to cause him to abandon his Christian virtues.
The Catholic Bishop of Gboko, Williams Avenya, who was one of the speakers at the event, had reminded Osinbajo of the then-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign promises that he would not Islamise the country and would protect the interest of all Nigerians including citizens of minority ethnic groups if voted into power.
The bishop who quoted Buhari, said, “My deputy is a Christian and there is no way I will Islamise Nigeria with many Christians in my team,” and noted that the killing of Christians and members of the minority ethnic group particularly in Benue State had proved that the Federal Government under Buhari was not living up to these promises.
Facing Osinbajo, the bishop said, “The point I’m trying to make is that a day is going to come when you, as the Vice-President, will bear the brunt of that problem of injustices in our land, especially those perpetrated on smaller ethnic groups that have no one to fight for them. So, as a Christian person, exonerate yourself from this situation,”the bishop advised the VP.
While responding, the vice-president said, “My Lord Bishop, you said you are not a politician, I am also not a politician. As a matter of fact, I’m also a priest and I’m a Christian, a born again Christian. Because I’m a born again Christian, my destiny is not determined by any man but by God who I serve.
“Let me assure you that under no circumstances, none whatsoever, will I give up my faith or refuse to stand up for my faith. You can take that to the bank. Even the position that I currently occupy, I did not ask for it and I’m prepared to leave it at a short notice.
“It doesn’t mean anything. I became a born again Christian after I became a professor, a professor of the law of evidence, a professor of proof. But when the Lord Jesus Christ met me, He persuaded me by showing me clearly that there is such a thing as the evidence of things that are not seen.
“It is because of the evidence of things that are not seen, it is because you can make something out of nothing that I stand here today as Vice-President.
“How possible can anyone say that the killing of women and children doesn’t matter because he is Vice-President or because he is President? How is that possible? Certainly, it cannot be for a person who is born again. A renewed mind will know that there is justice, there is consequence even if there is no justice here on earth.”
The Vice-President, while reacting to the issue raised by another speaker, Dr. Magdalene Dura, that the invasion of the state was an ethnic agenda, said no one would deliberately kill his own people.
“I do not accept and I do not believe that there is an agenda. No one will deliberately kill his own people. No one will do so. But we cannot bring back the dead but we can make life more bearable for the living.
“This is why coming here today at the behest of the President is first, to look at the situation myself, to get a first-hand view of the situation because the President has mandated me to take this on board and deal with the issues,”Osinbajo added.

EFCC Detains NigeriaSenator For Receiving N303m Vehicles

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested the lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom North-East senatorial district, Senator Bassey Akpan, for allegedly receiving vehicles worth N303m from oil magnate, Babajide Omokore, who is under trial for alleged fraud.
According to an EFCC report, Akpan while serving as a Commissioner for Finance under the government of Senator Godswill Akpabio, allegedly gave contracts to Omokore worth billions of naira.
The vehicles were believed to be kickbacks. It was learnt that Akpan was arrested by the anti-graft agency on Tuesday.
The EFCC Spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the arrest to Punch correspondent via a text message. On when the senator was arrested, Uwujaren stated,  “Yes, he was brought in yesterday (Tuesday).”
An EFCC report revealed that the vehicles Akpan allegedly received from Omokore ranged from Range Rover luxury cars to campaign buses and trucks that were bought with the proceeds of fraud.
The report accused Akpan of receiving vehicles worth N303m from Omokore while he was the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Finance as well as the Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Direct Labour Coordinating Committee,  whose job was to ensure that the government projects were completed using direct labour to save some money for the state.
Two of Omokore’s companies — Bay Atlantic Energy and Sahel Energy — were said to have received contracts from the committee headed by Akpan.
The report said, “Senator Bassey Akpan received a BMW X5 BP worth N50m; an Infinity QX56BP worth N45m; a Range Rover worth N40m; three Toyota Hiace buses worth N27m; two Toyota Hiace high-roof buses worth N16m, six Toyota Hilux D cabin vehicles worth N42m as well as other vehicles worth N83m.
“He received the vehicles from Omokore while heading a committee which was giving contracts to the same Omokore.
“He has been invited on several occasions but he has refused to show up.”
The lawmaker had, however, denied receiving kickbacks from Omokore, insisting that the businessman was his friend
“The vehicles are gifts from Jide Omokore on the need to ensure my personal safety. I have known him for 19 years. They are also contributions to my governorship campaign in 2014,” Akpan had said.

Internet Scam: DELSU Undergraduate Sent To Prison For Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, today May 16, 2018 arraigned and secured the conviction of one Michael Ebade, a student of Delta State University, Abraka.
He was convicted by Justice E.A Okorodas at State High Court, Sapele, Delta State, after being arraigned on a one count charge bordering on obtaining the sum N505,000 (Five Hundred and Five Thousands Naira) under false pretences from one Mr Ogwuegbu Collins, when he presented himself as Sonia Monday.
It was alleged that sometimes on June 6, 2016 the convict under the pretense of being a female by the name, Sonia Monday solicited for financial assistance from the petitioner via the social media precisely Whatsapp, claiming to be student who needed financial assistance.
Out of pity, the petitioner transferred the sum of Five Thousand Naira (N5, 000) from his company account to Fidelity Bank account of the convict who had opened an account in the name of Carlus Oluwaseun.
According to the petitioner, the convict further requested for his help for the second time wherein in an attempt to send another sum of N5,000 he mistakenly sent N500,000.
All efforts to convince Sonia Monday to transfer back the excess fund of N455,000 fell on deaf ear. He was rather threatened by the convict who said he was going to kill him and his entire family which prompted his complaint before investigation showed that he was dealing with a fellow man.
At the hearing of the matter in court, the prosecution counsel, R.E Ajobiewe told the court, "My Lord, the matter is for arraignment. Subject to your Lord’s convenience, the charge as well as the plea bargain which was signed by the defendant has been filed and served to the defendant”.
Thereafter, the trial judge asked the defendant if he signed the plea bargain voluntary to which he agreed to have done so on his own volition. When the charge was read to him, the convict peaded guilty.
In view of the plea bargain agreement and the fact that the convict has restituted his victim having paid back the total sum of money stolen, Justice E.A Okorodas sentenced the accused to one month imprisonment, the sentence is to run from the date of his arrest and without an option of fine.

Arsenal On The Verge Of Making First Signing After Wenger's Exit As Arteta Prepares To Take Over

Arsenal are in talks to make Borussia Dortmund defender, Sokratis Papastathopoulos their first signing of the post-Arsene Wenger era.
The 29-year-old is thought to be available for a fee in the region of £15million after failing to agree terms over a new contract at the Bundesliga club.
The Gunners are in the market for at least one centre-back this summer as their head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and head of football relations Raul Sanllehi lead an overhaul of the squad.
Mislintat has already proved an influential figure in signing Konstantinos Mavropanos and, having previously worked at Dortmund, he was central to Arsenal’s £56m capture of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
He looks set to raid his former club again with negotiations ongoing over Papastathopoulos, who is thought to have attracted interest from other clubs in Italy and England.
Reports in Germany suggest a deal is imminent but it is understood nothing is finalised at this stage, however, and Arsenal’s incoming manager is likely to be consulted before any agreement is reached.
Former Arsenal captain, Mikel Arteta, is expected to be named Wenger’s successor in the coming days.
Arteta, who is currently an assistant coach at Manchester City, is believed to be in advanced negotiations with the North London side.

Meet Enugu 72-year-old Man Who Married 57 Wives - Photo

For Dr Simon Odo alias Onuwa, the King of Satan worldwide, of Aji community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, the world is indeed on his palm.

The people of his community and indeed other neighbouring communities could not but marvel at his legendary and record-breaking marriages to over 50 wives. Not only that, Onuwa a 72-year-old herbalist, said he is not yet done with women and childbearing as preparations are currently on top gears for the marriage of his 58th wife.

When our reporter visited him at his home town, Aji, where the renowned herbalist plays host to thousands of people from both within and outside the country, who came to see him for one medical solution or the other, Onuwa proudly boasted to Sunday Sun that he and his family can win or mar election for any political candidate with its intimidating numbers.

“My family is large enough to constitute the majority in this community. We can win election for anybody in this town. We can as well fail any political candidate. My grandchildren are more than 200, not to talk about my children that are over 300. Add this figure to my 57 wives and you will understand what I mean. If my family fails to vote for anybody in this community, that person will not win that election. But for covetousness and jealousy, I would have appealed to the state government to make me and my family an autonomous community,” he said.

My journey into herbal medicine practice

Narrating his journey into the world of herbal medical practice, Onuwa told our reporter that, “it may amaze you to know that I am a baptized Roman Catholic Church member. I was baptized in 1956. I received my confirmation in 1958. I became a Mass servant in 1960 and was poisoned with tuberculosis. As if that was not enough, my health condition deteriorated and I became crippled for five years. When I was taken to Ijebu-Ode, Oyo State, my two legs have become rotten. After my treatment at Ijebu-Ode, I decided to learn the profession in the hands of the oldest woman there. After two years of apprenticeship, I came back here in 1962, treating and curing many deadly diseases and sicknesses. My parents were still alive then and they were surprised seeing me going into herbal medicine. They never wanted me to be a herbalist. But, they couldn’t help it. They were all afraid of me.”

My marital life

“Everybody will always like to know why and how I married up to 57 wives. I married at the age of 20 years when I was in Ijebu-Ode. People always wonder how I managed to marry three wives from almost the same community. The answer is simple. Whenever I marry from say, Kogi State, I will ask my newly married wife from that area to look for a wife for me from that side. That was how I managed to spread my tentacles as far as marriage is concerned. I don’t use charm to lure any woman into marriage. I have never done it and I will never do it. Neither do I take drugs before I have sexual intercourse with my wives,” he disclosed.

Onuwa disclosed that out of his 50 wives, four are Yoruba, another four are from Igala, saying that he married from so many other states which he could not mention.

Asked how he is able to understand their language, Onuwa said language is never a barrier, as he has never married uneducated wife.

According to him, all his wives are educated, some with NCE while others with bachelor’s degree; teaching in his nursery and primary schools built in his compound.

“I have nursery and primary schools in my compound which are being managed by my wives.

“Out of the 57 wives, only one did not bear any child.”

Managing my family

“All my wives cook with one pot. They don’t cook in different pots. Never. Only one pot. I kill cow every month for them to be used as meat. I have warned all my children not to marry more than one wife. Reason being that they cannot be so hardworking like me. Again, my dad was the only son, but I am not the only son. So, that’s why I warned them not to marry more than one wife. I did it, but I will never want any of my children to do it,”
 he said.

Why I bear the name King of Satan

“I bear the name, King of Satan because if you read your Bible very well, you will see that it was Satan who tempted human beings, Adam and Eve, and they failed into the temptation. Satan tempted human being with women. So, I fell for it. Satan is my father. I follow his footsteps and demands in procreation and that is why I married up to 57 wives and still counting.”

For his children, Dr. Onuwa said: “I will like my children to be greater and more popular than me. I am not regretting not being a practising Christian because I know I am a good man. I don’t poison anybody. I don’t commit adultery and I don’t steal. I don’t give people poisonous medicine to kill anybody. So, I don’t have any regret at all.”

Didier Drogba is a football legend who made his name at Chelsea Football Club. He is well-known for his remarkable scoring abilities and passion for the game. Chelsea fans voted him in 2012 as the club’s greatest player ever. A true hero of football, Drogba has a nice Mercedes SL65 to match his status. The car is sufficiently classy to equal the stature of a man who has inspired and entertained millions of fans around the world.
Emmanuel Adebayor owns a fleet of pricey luxury cars among them a Porsche Carrera, a Bentley, a Mercedes G-Class and a Fisker Karma. But his Aston Martin DBS (Volante) is the most expensive car in his fleet and probably the loveliest of all.
Mikel Obi’s form and quality when at Chelsea didn’t go down quite well with many of his fans but that in no way affected the balance on his account statement. The story is also different when it comes to the kind of car this African footballer drives. Mikel rides a 2008 model of the Bentley Continental GT among other top of the range cars. The high performance 2008 Bentley Continental GT features an equally high performance 12 cylinder engine, luxury interior and exterior details and standard 20” wheels. The cost is a whole £145,000.
Sulley Muntari  was  part of the Portsmouth squad that lifted the FA cup during the two consecutive seasons of 2008/9 and 2009/10. He drives a sweet Lamborghini Gallardo with an estimated worth of about £135,000. He loves cars so much that he also runs a car pimping business.

5 Students Dead, 12 Missing As Bridge Suddenly Collapses At Tourist Site

It has been reported that at least five students were killed and twelve others went missing on Sunday after a bridge collapsed at a tourist site in Pakistani Kashmir.
Officials made this revelation on Sunday, adding there was little hope of finding survivors.
According to a report by the Agence France Presse, AFP, The bridge, which overlooked a ravine in mountainous Neelum district, collapsed after some three dozen university students walked across it to view a waterfall.
“We have recovered four bodies of boys and one of a girl. Twelve others are still missing and we don’t have any hope about them (surviving) because the water is very cold”, said Chaudhary Imtiaz, a senior government official in Kashmir’s capital Muzaffarabad.
Imtiaz told AFP eight other students were injured in the accident.
Local police official Saleem Durrani confirmed the toll and said that the authorities had posted a warning near the bridge, telling visitors to walk across it in small numbers because it was only designed to accommodate five people at a time.
“The bridge collapsed because around 40 people climbed it… at the same time,” Durrani said.
“Its cemented foundation could not sustain the weight”, he added.
The scenic Himalayan region is a popular tourist destination but lacks infrastructure.
Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since the end of British colonial rule in 1947, but both claim the territory in full.
